Affect Detection from Multichannel Physiology during Learning Sessions with AutoTutor

چکیده
It is widely acknowledged that learners experience a variety of emotions while interacting with Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS), hence, detecting and responding to emotions might improve learning outcomes. This study uses machine learning techniques to detect learners’ affective states from multichannel physiological signals (heart activity, respiration, facial muscle activity, and skin conductivity) during tutorial interactions with AutoTutor, an ITS with conversational dialogues. Learners were asked to self-report (both discrete emotions and degrees of valence/arousal) the affective states they experienced during their sessions with AutoTutor via a retrospective judgment protocol immediately after the tutorial sessions. In addition to mapping the discrete learning-centered emotions (e.g., confusion, frustration, etc) on a dimensional valence/arousal space, we developed and validated an automatic affect classifier using physiological signals. Results indicate that the classifier was moderately successful at detecting naturally occurring emotions during the

Malleability of Students' Perceptions of an Affect-Sensitive Tutor and Its Influence on Learning
We evaluated an affect sensitive version of AutoTutor, a dialogue based ITS that simulates human tutors. While the original AutoTutor is sensitive to students’ cognitive states, the affect sensitive tutor (Supportive tutor) also responds to students’ affective states (boredom, confusion, and frustration) with empathetic, encouraging, and motivational dialogue moves that are accompanied by appro...
متن کاملAffect and learning: an exploratory look into the role of affect in learning with AutoTutor
The role that affective states play in learning was investigated from the perspective of a constructivist learning framework. We observed six different affect states (frustration, boredom, flow, confusion, eureka and neutral) that potentially occur during the process of learning introductory computer literacy with AutoTutor, an intelligent tutoring system with tutorial dialogue in natural langu...

In an attempt to discover the facial action units for affective states that occur during complex learning, this study adopted an emote-aloud procedure in which participants were recorded as they verbalized their affective states while interacting with an intelligent tutoring system (AutoTutor). Participants’ facial expressions were coded by two expert raters using Ekman’s Facial Action Coding S...
متن کاملCombining Classifiers in Multimodal Affect Detection
Affect detection where users’ mental states are automatically recognized from facial expressions, speech, physiology and other modalities, requires accurate machine learning and classification techniques. This paper investigates how combined classifiers, and their base classifiers, can be used in affect detection using features from facial video and multichannel physiology. The base classifiers...
متن کاملDetection of Emotions during Learning with AutoTutor
The relationship between emotions and learning was investigated by tracking the affective states that college students experienced while interacting with AutoTutor, an intelligent tutoring system with conversational dialogue. An emotionally responsive tutor would presumably facilitate learning, but this would only occur if learner emotions can be accurately identified. After a learning session ...
